Short answer: the 2026 GTO bike is a Z2
Kansai TV's official site establishes the 2026 series as a new continuation starring Takashi Sorimachi as Eikichi Onizuka. The programme page does not name the motorcycle, but Bagus! motorcycle—responsible for coordinating, managing and test-riding the production vehicle—describes Onizuka's bike as a Z2.
Z2 is the popular name for Kawasaki's 750RS. Its close visual relationship to the 900 Super Four/Z1 explains the common mix-up, but Kawasaki treats them as distinct names and capacities.
Sundance Enterprise, which led the vehicle design, describes the 2026 production bike's black-and-gold colour scheme and dedicated rear-suspension work. The dark bodywork and gold accents give it the forceful presence associated with Onizuka.
The 1998 drama, the 2024 revival and the 2026 series were separate productions, so their filming motorcycles and specifications may differ.
Z1 vs Z2: why the names are confused
Kawasaki identifies the 1972 Z1 as the 900 Super Four and the 1973 Z2 as the Japan-market 750RS derived from it. Their shared shape and history make the shorthand easy to blur.

The exact model year and individual custom parts have not been published. Anyone building a similar style should prioritise the motorcycle's condition, roadworthiness and advice from a qualified specialist.
Where to continue today
There is no new-bike substitute for a historic Z2. The Z900RS is the most direct current connection if the round headlamp, teardrop tank and four-cylinder presence are the attraction. The lighter Z650RS and sharply styled Suzuki KATANA show two different alternatives.

Are the Z1 and Z2 the same motorcycle?
No. Z1 denotes the 900 Super Four, while Z2 denotes the Japan-market 750RS. Their closely related origins and styling cause the confusion.
Did every earlier GTO use the same Z2?
